CAN COLLINGHAM SUPPORT 600 NEW HOMES? Is the headline that’s been posted around the village, but what does it mean? Let’s have a look at the map first:

Okay, I know the map isn’t very clear, but you can get an idea of what we’re talking about. The areas coloured green already have planning permission or are in the process of getting it, the areas coloured yellow are possible areas for expansion and the areas coloured red have been ruled out.
So what does it all mean? Mostly, it’s ‘pie-in-the-sky’! It all started when, at the behest of the government the District Council advertised for possible building land that could be utilised within the next fifteen years. Everybody and his brother that owned a piece of land that fitted the requirements of the advertisement replied and that is what you see on the map, plus some sites added by the DC as a ‘desk exercise’.
Some of the sites have been rejected (red); some are left and marked as ‘possible’ (yellow) and only two are up for immediate development (green). The thing to remember is that just because a site is ‘possible’ doesn’t mean it will be built on. Each and every site must be the subject of a full planning application before anything can happen, indeed, some would have to be incorporated in the village envelope before they could even be considered and that can’t happen overnight. The planning process of course, determines the density of housing on any given site.

Collingham is a long way from having to support 600 new homes, but on the other hand, some expansion is inevitable.
