Collingham Traffic Again
At the end of January, Wright’s S7L bus was hit by speeding cars twice in ten days. The accidents occurred in the same place, the junction with High Street and Woodhill Road (Click here to see map.), on both occasions the bus was turning right into Woodhill Road and on both occasions was hit on the off side. Trying to overtake a bus as it’s turning right is not a brilliant manoeuvre! The bus operators believe it is now so dangerous they will no longer pick up passengers opposite the One Stop Shop, but will move the bus stop into Woodhill Road.
On both occasions it was excessive speed on the part of the cars involved, taking the blind bend just past the end of Queen Street so fast they couldn’t stop for the bus. Indeed one car hit the bus so hard it spun into the Grey Horse pub damaging its structure to the point where it had to be closed for repairs, then colliding with the low wall fronting the car park. Luckily, on neither of these occasions were any passengers or the bus driver injured, I don’t know about the car drivers though.
For the last sixty years to my knowledge, the people of Collingham have been campaigning for a bypass, most recently losing out to a new bus station for Mansfield. Investment in this part of the county is non-existent, the County Council, whatever the colour of it’s politics, won’t even surface the footpaths properly As mentioned elsewhere on this site, many patients from the area are being sent to Sutton-in-Ashfield along one of the worst roads in the county, until you get to Rainworth that is! The last excuse for not building a bypass was that it wasn’t of “sufficient economic benefit”, totally ignoring the social benefits that are equally important according to the government.
The sad thing about all this is that people are going to have to die before anything is done!

CART and Collingham Traffic!
An open letter to our County Councillor
Dear Vincent Dobson,
Congratulations on your re-election to the County Council!
In your election address you and your party promised to protect villages from the blight of heavy goods vehicles and as you are aware this is a particular problem in Collingham.
CART (Collingham Action for Reducing Traffic) would like to offer the following solutions, in no particular order, to the distress caused by over 500 LGVs going along the High St each day (averages as one every 3 mins!).
- Bypass- often discussed, never delivered
- Electronic traffic signs- one installed, need another at the north end of the village
- Traffic calming measures- would help to slow down LGVs
- 20mph speed limit for all vehicles in Collingham - would add one minute to the average journey time through the village
- Signs on both ends of A1133 recommending alternative routes for LGVs
- Installation of a quiet road surface along the High St
We look forward to the implementation of several of the above recommendations and trust that you will fight for these measures on our behalf.
Yours sincerely
Derek N Middlemiss (On behalf of CART)
